Weeks after John Ratcliffe made a surprise trip to Moscow, he has now reportedly met Zelensky at Shannon Airport in Ireland.

And the setting makes this even stranger: their planes were apparently refueling, and somewhere in that overlap, the Ukrainian president and America’s spy chief sat down for a conversation whose contents remain secret.

That might sound like a chance airport encounter.

Except Ratcliffe’s role appears to be expanding.

Earlier this month U.S. officials had told European counterparts Ratcliffe was preparing to take a larger role in Washington’s Russia-Ukraine diplomacy, potentially conducting shuttle diplomacy between Moscow and Kyiv.

He has now met Russian intelligence officials in Moscow and Zelensky in Ireland within weeks.

We don’t know what was discussed at Shannon.

But America’s CIA director suddenly looks a lot more like someone entering the negotiations head first, than just watching from the intelligence side.
