Kyrylo Budanov says Russians are increasingly being forced to confront weaknesses in their own military and air-defence systems as the consequences of the war become harder to keep at a distance.

“The Russians are beginning to understand that their army is not that strong, that their air defense systems are not that good, and that the Russian army is actually not capable of protecting the temporarily occupied Ukrainian territory.

For Budanov, the deeper shift is psychological.

“The understanding that there will be retribution comes to people when they personally begin to see and feel that the war is not somewhere in some part of the world, but on their own territory. Therefore, the turning point has already begun.”

His argument is that Russia’s strategic depth once helped insulate much of its population from the war Moscow launched. As that sense of distance erodes, so does the perception that Russia can wage war indefinitely without consequences reaching home.
