It was really only a matter of time. While the results of the Democratic primary were known fairly early on Tuesday night, it could still be a few days before we know the results of the Republican primary in Pennsylvania, with Dr. Oz and David McCormick still running neck and neck. It’s bad enough that Donald Trump’s endorsement may have actually made things worse for Oz, who had a slight lead over the rest of the candidates in the race before the former guy weighed in. At best, the endorsement had no effect and at worst, it sank Oz by two points.
Where are we in this debacle? Donald Trump decided to run his mouth yet again and order the Republican Party of Pennsylvania to stop counting votes that were pushing his hand-picked endorsement further behind – or even worse, this statement he actually put out in writing on his Truth social media platform, while fomenting conspiracies about how votes are counted in the U.S. as a whole. It’s pretty much exactly the same as when he asked the Secretary of State in Georgia to find him the extra votes he needed to win (which wouldn’t make him win even if they did “find” them.
In doing so, he’s given ammo to not just the Democratic candidates in Pennsylvania who need to win, but also to Democrats running against Trumpian candidates throughout the country, as they can then ask each of their opponents if they felt that not only are the electors rigged against them, but are they being set up by their own party, and there’s no desirable response they can produce – angering voters in the middle with whatever answer they give. Make no mistake – if we put in the work, we can win in Pennsylvania and keep the Senate in 2022.
