Pneumonic Plague: Trump says US ‘willing to help’ Russia

Infectious disease specialist Dr. Peter Chin-Hong joins LiveNOW’s Shawna Khalafi to discuss lingering questions amid reports of a suspected fatal pneumonic plague case in Russia.

President Donald Trump told reporters Monday that the U.S. is “willing to help” Russia with a potential outbreak, calling the fatal case a “big problem” for the country.

Pneumonic plague can be treated with common antibiotics, especially when treatment begins early, the official said. Appropriate therapy should begin as soon as plague is suspected, and patients can be treated with intravenous or oral antimicrobials depending on the severity of illness and other factors, according to the CDC.
