🇩🇪🇺🇦 The engine behind Germany’s €11.5 billion a year in weapons for Ukraine is a secretive unit of fewer than 20 people that some call a guerrilla team.

It’s called the Sonderstab Ukraine, tucked inside a high-security wing of the defense ministry.

One collaborator calls it “incredibly un-German,” and for good reason: while the Bundeswehr’s own procurement runs through a 13,000-strong agency and layers of red tape, this unit can strike a weapons deal in as little as 2 weeks.

The trick is that contracts are signed by Ukraine’s government, not Germany’s, letting the team bypass the usual procurement labyrinth. Kyiv hands over a shopping list, Berlin pays the bill.

Even the Germans understand that the only way to make their bureaucracy move fast is to go around it.
